Measuring Food Safety and comparing self checking systems

GENERAL INFORMATION

Scope
The Hygiene Package, has been in force for some years now. The goal of this legislative framework was to improve food safety. In this symposium 2 important aspects will be highlighted :
• how can we measure ‘food safety’
• how can food and feed business operators (FBO) be encouraged to implement reliable systems ensuring the safety of their products (self-checking- or autocontrolsystems) and contribute to the improvement of the food safety.

Although the food and feed chain is a very complex system the FASFC and its scientific committee felt it necessary to develop a methodology that should be able to give an overall picture on the safety of the food chain. The outcome of this development will be presented.

FBO have the primary responsibility for the safety of foodstuffs and they are required to set up a self-checking system according to HACCP principles. However, the implementation and encouragement may vary from one Member State to another.

Belgium e.g. provides for the possibility for business operators to have their self-checking system approved by means of audits conducted by either a public administration or a certification body based on specifically developed guides for good practices. The symposium will give an overview of the implementation in different member states and the impact on inspection policy

Who should attend?
The symposium will provide numerous opportunities to exchange knowledge and opinions between different stakeholders, i.e. industry as well as policy and regulatory decision makers, industrial representatives, etc.

Colloquium language
The presentations will be conducted in English.

Dinner
A dinner will be served at the lunch room near the meeting room.
